Lottie’s New Friend by Petra Mathers
.
This term, I asked the children to bring in their favourite books from home to read at playgroup.
.
Boo and Shona brought in Lottie’s New Friend.
.
At first reading this book was a little awkward to read. The language didn’t flow at times and it was wordy. Maybe it was just because I was unfamiliar with it. I did wonder whether I should do an accent for Dodo (she is German). Definitely a story to read through yourself before you read it to children.
.
Despite this, the story has many possibilities. Two friends, Herb and Lottie, have to negotiate and navigate their friendship when Lottie makes a new friend, Dodo. This book is the perfect story to generate discussion with pre-schoolers and young primary schoolers about the emotions involved in friendship. It is quite wonderful.
.
We only read this book once, but it would be much better to read at playgroup over three weeks. The first week I would read it straight through without any discussion. By the third week, the children would be so used to the story they would be more open to talking about their feelings associated with friendship.
.
It’s so good, I’ve ordered a second-hand copy to use in my work with children at school.
